Catalogue of Australian Fungi

Project summary

The Interactive Catalogue of Australian Fungi (ICAF) provides the currently accepted name of species of fungi described or reported from Australia. All synonyms that have been used to refer to Australian material are also provided. Under each accepted name, a comprehensive list of literature references to the occurrence of species in Australia can be viewed. References that contain illustrations are indicated.

The Interactive Catalogue of Australian Fungi presently covers macrofungi in the Basidiomycota and Myxomycota, including mushrooms, coral fungi, bracket fungi, puffballs and slime moulds.

The catalogue was commenced in the early 1980s and originally maintained on index cards. A text version was published as Catalogue and bibliography of Australian fungi, volumes 2A and 2B in the Fungi of Australia series. This text was converted into a database, running at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, which underlies the current on-line Catalogue. Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) provided support for compilation of the printed volumes and also for development of the database. The last updates to names were in 2004, but plans are underway to bring names up-to-date, and to complete the Catalogue for all groups of Fungi and fungoid organisms.
